CHOSEN TO BE SET APART
How is our Christian life going? Are we separate from the
world or a part of it?
As we continue our Bible journey in 1 Samuel 2, we will be
reminded of who God is and what is expected from us as His children.
1 Samuel 2:2
There is no one holy
like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
Hannah praises God for who He is. In her prayer, she
mentions some of God’s attributes.
First, God is holy. He is set apart from all that is unclean
or unworthy. He is majestic and powerful and active in His perfect holiness. No
other being in the universe is holy as He is.
Second, there is no God besides him; no being but what is of
him, and none is holy but by him; the holiness of angels is from him; the
holiness of Adam in innocence was of him; and all the holiness of his chosen
ones come from Him, to which they are chosen by him, and which is secured in
that choice unto them, and are sanctified by God the Father, in Christ, and
through the Spirit: God is One.
Finally, Hannah adds that there is no rock like our God. The
idea of God being a rock means that He is a place of safety and security,
especially in times of trouble. He is the place to run and hide when the storm
comes. David will write, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my
deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge" (2 Samuel 22:2–3).
What lessons can we learn here?
In the beginning, God created the first human beings holy
but because of sin, the holiness was marred. Throughout history, God is at
work. He sent his Son to restore that image that was destroyed by sin. That’s
why our holiness comes the moment we received Jesus in our lives. God has
called us from darkness and set us apart for His purpose. Now that we have new
life in Christ, God is holy and we are expected to live a holy life as Jesus
did. There’s nothing to worry about if we are set apart from the pattern of
this world because God is our rock. In Him, we are safe and secure.
